For my first blog assignment, I was told to read "Godfather's Death" and "A&P". In "Godfather's Death", there are many themes and underlying meanings. For example , one theme I found most prominent was Greed. Greed in this story can be described as a selfish desire for money and power. In the story a poor man with many children is approached by Death asking to be his childs godfather. By accepting his offer, his child would become a rich and famous doctor, the only rule is that the son can only heal who death wants him to. The doctor (and/or the son) got so caught up in his successful life that he disobeys Death and heals both the King and the Kings daughter, although they weren't supposed to be healed. By saving the Kings daughter the doctor would be promised her hand in marriage and inherit the thrown. Death decided to take the doctor instead of the King and princess, and kill him. Before his passing the doctor said, " Light a new candle for me. If you love me, do it, so that I may enjoy my life, become King, and marry the beautiful princess." ( pg.15). By saying this, the doctor is implying that the only way that he May be happy is to allow him to do all of that. Death had given him everything... money, fame, and a very successful life, but it wasn't good enough for the doctor and he felt he needed more. Which made him greedy and ungrateful for all that Death has done for him. In "A&P" one of the main themes is Power. The story follows the perspective of Sammy, a 19 year old cashier who watched as 3 young girls walked into his work wearing bathing suits. The girls were given the side-eye and watched by everyone in the store because of what they were wearing. The girls were then publicly embarrassed by Sammy's boss, who said their outfits were inappropriate and to never wear their bathing suits to his store again because it's store policy. Sammy then stated, "That's policy for you.Policy is what the kingpin want. What the others want is juvenile delinquency." (pg.22). Sammy's boss was asserting his power on the girls mainly because he could... they couldn't fight him on it because it's his store and he makes his own rules that suit his desires, no one else's. Power can be seen in "Godfather's Death". Death himself has always had power over the doctor, but the doctor felt that because he's his godson he could so whatever he wants and believes he has power over Death in his own way. Death was forced to show the doctor that he's the one that had the power the entire time by ultimately killing the doctor. Overall, although both these stories are drastically different, they share common elements and themes that create very interesting and intreguing writing.
